During the bull run of 2021, the crypto industry saw a massive surge of interest in one of the most popular use cases of blockchain technology: web3 gaming. However, the narrative for the current market cycle has shifted dramatically.

The economies of these once-popular games have significantly contracted. In 2025 alone, BitPinas recorded at least 22 crypto games that either completely shut down or halted their web3 features to pivot back to traditional (Web2) gaming spaces.

Unfortunately, the industry’s struggles have continued into 2026. This article serves as a continuously updating tracker of blockchain-based games that have closed their doors or abandoned their crypto integrations this year.

Crypto Gaming Status of 2026

According to data from DappRadar, the activity and trading volume of native tokens in the crypto gaming sector have been notably sluggish. In fact, gaming token volume only surpassed the $10 million mark three times in the last 12 months:

  • August 24, 2025: $10.34 million
  • December 26, 2025: $23.09 million
  • January 28, 2026: $17.3 million

The number of unique active wallet transactions for these tokens hovered in a range of 2.6 million to 4.78 million. These figures pale in comparison to the billions of dollars flowing into newer narratives, such as the tokenization of Real-World Assets (RWAs).

Jihoz: More Games Will Die

In a recent interview with gaming influencer Yellow Panther, Jeffrey “Jihoz” Zirlin, co-founder of Sky Mavis (the developer behind Axie Infinity and the Ronin Network), expressed that the ongoing wave of game shutdowns is unstoppable — especially during market downturns.

Zirlin pointed out that some developers underestimate the impact of crypto market volatility on their project’s runway.

“I will continue to say this: you’re going to see a lot of teams die. I’m not throwing shade on games on other chains; that will also happen with games on Ronin.

This sentiment is backed by data. A recent report from the Blockchain Gaming Alliance (BGA) revealed that 32.6% of gaming developers cited cash shortages as their biggest challenge to surviving in the industry.

“Generally it’s really hard to ship a successful game—and games shut down all the time.”

Web3 Games That Said Goodbye in 2026

Below is the expanding list of blockchain games that have shut down or halted their web3 features this year.

Pixiland

  • Network: Ronin Network
  • Status: Pivoted to Web2 (January 15, 2026)
  • The Details: Pixiland is a pixel strategy game that had been building for two years. In mid-January, the team announced a full transition to an off-chain model, completely canceling its Token Generation Event (TGE). Consequently, the “wPixi” points that players grinded for in anticipation of an airdrop will no longer convert to a crypto token.
  • Reason Given: The team cited “market volatility” and “regulatory uncertainty” as the primary reasons for the pivot, claiming that supporting blockchain infrastructure had become too resource-intensive for their small, bootstrapped team.

Forgotten Runiverse

  • Network: Ronin Network
  • Status: Offline Indefinitely (January 27, 2026)
  • The Details: Forgotten Runiverse is a fantasy-themed MMORPG. Late in January, the developers announced that the game would be taken offline “until further notice.”
  • Reason Given: The team admitted that they could no longer financially maintain the game in its current state due to multiple compounding challenges. However, they clarified that the project is not entirely abandoned and they hope to eventually secure the resources to relaunch.
